Mike Edmonds

Festival Special Guest

Mike Edmonds grew up in rural Essex, UK. Despite suffering from achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism, he led what might be described as a typical post-war British childhood, dominated by comic books, schoolyard pranks, economic austerity and an obsession with cinema.

After several years spent working in his parents’ hotel amid the Mods, Rockers and swinging sixties’ vibe of Southend-On-Sea, Mike struck out on his own, trying his hand at various jobs before answering an advertisement for “midgets” in The Stage magazine, placed by celebrated British director Ken Loach. It quickly became clear that Mike had found his calling.

The career that followed has encompassed cinematic blockbusters, iconic TV series, extensive stage work (including a stint at the Royal Shakespeare Company), radio plays, music videos and, inevitably, a lot of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Quickly making the leap from “specialist extra” to sought-after character actor, Mike has stolen scenes in some of cinema’s biggest movies (Time Bandits, Return of the Jedi, Roger Rabbit, Harry Potter and more) and traded lines with everyone from Diana Rigg to Colin Firth and Lawrence Olivier. Directors he’s worked with include Terry Gilliam, Ridley Scott, Robert Zemeckis and Jim Henson.

A true “actor’s actor” who’s also a huge hit with fans, Mike has met the considerable challenges imposed by achondroplasia with his immense talent, true dedication to the craft and a uniquely engaging attitude to life. He continues to travel extensively, attending festivals and conventions all around the world to connect with film lovers and colleagues.

“Great to see Mike Edmonds get the recognition he deserves. Wonderful person, GIANT talent!” – tweet by Mark Hamill (@HamillHimself)
